VicRoads manages vast amounts of critical documentation for the design and construction of roads, bridges and infrastructure across Victoria. These drawings, plans and specifications are vital to the ongoing planning and maintenance of roadways, management of traffic and road safety. To ensure the ongoing access, security and searchability of these assets, VicRoads turned to Micro Image to create digital surrogates of the collections of large format plans, maps and drawings.
Our Approach
Micro Image used high-quality large format scanning equipment and industry leading processes to digitise maps, plans and drawings of various sizes. The resolution and quality captured by Micro Image ensures that all details including handwritten, faint, blurry and discoloured items are optimised for legibility, preserving the information for future use. Micro Image use advanced handling techniques for large format items, including Mylar film when required, to protect fragile or damaged items.
All digitised files were carefully checked, indexed, named and the data delivered to VicRoads for ingestion into their system.
Micro Image has also helped to ensure ongoing accessibility of VicRoads older media that was at risk of becoming obsolete (such as CD Rom, floppy disks and microfiche).
The Outcome
The digitisation of these collections ensured that all information assets are now available in a secure digital format and integrated into the VicRoads asset repository. Access to the information contained in documents detailing Victoria’s expansive road infrastructure for critical business, urgent repairs and scheduled maintenance is available to remote workers and on-site teams requiring instant access to digital versions.
